Asylum Hair Lightener

Asylum Hair Lightener is a salon quality hair lightener. It mixes to a creamy gel consistency unlike normal bleaches and this makes application much easier and also prevents dryness or flaking during use. It is ammonia free and has a dust free powder which makes it much kinder to the hair by producing less swelling, porosity and damage.

CAUTION:
Please read all instructions carefully and do a strand test before proceeding with your hair lightening adventure, this is one of the most important steps ignored. If in doubt about anything please contact us at admin@sinister.co.nz.

Instructions:

Lightening results will depend on the condition and colour of your natural hair. A strand test is recommended to give you a better idea as to how long it will take to achieve the desired results (refer to the developing times below as a guideline) and to avoid any complications. Everyone’s hair is different so you need to work out what works for you.

IMPORTANT:
* Make sure you have an old t-shirt or cape on to protect your clothing and skin.
* Use provided plastic gloves when working with any of the materials.
* Use a PLASTIC mixing bowl and spoon/spatula to mix ingredients.
* Be careful not to inhale powder.
* Only mix what you need. Any left over unmixed powder or cream developer can be saved for later use.
* Asylum Hair Lightener is to be mixed at a ratio of 2 parts developer to 1 part bleaching powder.
* This is an off the scalp bleach, so avoid getting it on your scalp.
* Sometimes more than one bleaching session is required to achieve the shade you desire. Each bleaching session should be at least 48 hours apart with conditioning treatments in between!

STRAND TEST:
1. Your hair should be clean, dry, and brushed. Firmly pull back your hair and and pull one strand of hair from behind your ear for the test and tie back the rest to keep it out of the way.
2. Wearing the enclosed gloves, mix the strand test mixture of ½ teaspoon of powder with 1 tsp of cream developer to a creamy mixture.
3. Apply mixture generously to strand, making sure the test strand does not touch the rest of your hair.
4. Check test strand every 10-15 minutes (be sure to refer below to developing times). To check results wipe away mixture with a damp tissue. If your hair looks red or gold reapply mixture. When the strand is the same colour as the desired shade, proceed with full application.
5. Rinse off the test strand and towel dry your hair.
6. Discard any leftover mixture. Thoroughly rinse and dry the tub prior to actual application.

APPLICATION:
  1. Make sure hair is clean and dry. Thoroughly comb/brush your hair to remove any tangles.
  2. If you have very short hair you can bleach your hair in one go. Otherwise do the following:
    • Mix ratio is 1 Powder : 2 Developer
    • Split hair into 4 sections and clip hair up using plastic clips.
    • Release one of the clips and starting at the back of your head. Take small horizontal sections of hair and saturate with the bleach leaving the roots (½ inch closest to your scalp) unbleached. Gradually work through this first section placing bleached sections on top of each other until the section is fully bleached. Work as quickly as you can without rushing as the bleach on these sections has started lightening your hair already and to get an even coverage you really want to be leaving the bleach on all your hair (apart from roots for roughly the same time).
    • Repeat above with each section.
    • Go over sections bleaching the roots - again starting from the back and working forwards.
    • Pile hair loosely on top of your head and put a plastic cap on to help keep the mixture moist and to protect things around you.

  3. Check hair colour and texture every 5-10 minutes to ensure you do not over process your hair. To do so, remove plastic cap and check to see what colour has been achieved and if hair has not reached desired level reseal the plastic cap (or tin foil if doing streaks) and re-check in another 5-10 minutes. Bleach can process for about two hours if hair is resistant but must be checked regularly to avoid over bleaching and damage.
  4. Once desired colour has been achieved rinse out (refer below).

RINSING IT OUT:
  1. Remove plastic cap and rinse hair under warm water until water runs clear.
  2. Gently squeeze excess water form the hair and apply a mild shampoo and gently rinse clean.
  3. Apply a high quality conditioner to help restore some of the goodness your hair has lost during the lightening process. (Ignore this step if you are to follow with Manic Panic or Special Effects dyes).
  4. Gently towel dry hair avoiding rubbing or ringing the hair, let hair dry naturally.
